Frequently asked questions

How long does a visit take?

A highlights tour takes about an hour and a half to two hours. Art lovers should plan half a day. Either way, the timed-entry slot only controls when you enter — you can stay until closing.

Do I need to book in advance?

Yes. Tickets are sold for specific arrival slots and popular slots sell out days ahead in high season. Book on the official museum website — resellers exist and charge more.

Can I bring a bag or backpack?

Large bags, backpacks and umbrellas must be left at the free cloakroom before the rooms begin. A small handbag or camera bag is usually fine — the security staff have the final say.

Is photography allowed?

Generally yes, without flash or tripods. Follow the signs in each room; temporary exhibitions sometimes differ.

Are children welcome?

Very. Children and teenagers under 18 from the EU enter free, the route is stroller friendly on the main floor, and the subject matter — goddesses, heroes, sword fights in paint — works well for kids.

Is the museum accessible?

Yes — lifts serve the gallery floor, and staff are used to helping. Check the official website for the current accessibility details and any lift maintenance notices.

When is the museum closed?

Mondays, plus 1 January and 25 December. Hours are otherwise 8:15 am to 6:30 pm, with last admission earlier — see our Visitor Guide for the details.

What else is nearby?

The museum stands right between Piazza della Signoria and the Ponte Vecchio. Even a short walk connects the two in ten minutes, with the Vasari Corridor joining them overhead.
